Updated Saturday 6:12 AM. The Beach Day score (1 to 10) is how nice it is to sit on the sand in the best 3 hours between 10 AM and 5 PM: warmth, sun, wind and rain chance, minus any hours the tide covers the beach. The water call is separate and only about the water: a D or F grade, a county warning, or rain in the last 3 days means stay out, whatever the weather. Crowds are our guess from weekends, holidays, school breaks and the weather, not a count.

Dogs: Check the signs; county rules apply
Carpinteria
A gentle slope and tide pools at the reef. State park day use is $10 a car, sunrise to sunset.
Dogs: Not on the beach; allowed in the campground and day-use area (rules)
Dog rules and the Carpinteria fee were checked on the linked official pages on October 30, 2026. Rules change, so the signs at the beach win.
Check first at Leadbetter (C), Arroyo Burro (Hendry's) (C) and Goleta Beach (C). Stay out at East Beach (F), Butterfly Beach (D) and Carpinteria State Beach (D). Grades come from the county's weekly bacteria tests, published on Heal the Bay's Beach Report Card.
Heal the Bay advises staying out of the water for 72 hours after rain. Storm runoff carries bacteria from streets and creeks into the ocean, and it is worst near creek mouths and storm drains.
Heal the Bay grades each beach A to F from the bacteria levels in the county's samples. A means low risk of getting sick. We say stay out at a D or F, or whenever the county posts a warning, whatever the weather.
Dogs can run off leash from the Shoreline Park stairs west to the Arroyo Burro estuary at Hendry's. Dogs are not allowed on East, West or Leadbetter beaches, or on the sand at Carpinteria State Beach (they can go in its campground and day-use area). Other county beaches post their own rules at the entrance.
